Chinese at restaurant. Mon, Nov 21, 2011.

11/21/2011. 1302. I was shopping at a store and ran into a friend I hadn't seen in a while. He was going to eat supper by himself at a nearby restaurant, and so we could catch up, he invited me to go along. I had already eaten supper, but went anyway.

I had been there before, and offered material, but the nearby Chinese restaurant was under new ownership, so I took in a Traditional Chinese Book of Mormon and a Simplified Chinese copy, along with an English copy.

After the meal (I just snacked), I offered the waitress the Book of Mormon, and she graciously accepted the Traditional Chinese and the English copies. She said she wasn't very good at reading English, so the books would be a good learning experience for her.

On the way out, I also offered the Book of Mormon to the owners, but they politely declined.

Chinese at restaurant. Tue, Jun 14, 2011.

6/14/2011. 1285. I invited a member of the Elders' Quorum to have lunch with me during his lunch break. We went to a Chinese restaurant near where he works. We ordered at the counter and sat down. While waiting on the food I put Chinese (Simplified script) and English copies of the Book of Mormon on the table. When the cashier brought out the food, we offered the material to her, and she accepted both the Chinese and English copies. She was enthusiastic about receiving bilingual Chinese/English material. My friend goes there often, so he can follow up easily.

Chinese at massage place. Mon, Nov 1, 2010.

11/01/2010. 1259. I was walking by a place that offers a quick chair massage, the kind where you sort of sit/kneel, and put your face in a support rest, for only a few dollars for a few minutes. I've recently started doing some new exercises, and my shoulders were a bit stiff, so it seemed worth the price.

The employees were Chinese, and I happened to have been carrying some Chinese and English copies of the Book of Mormon. I had planned on offering them at a nearby Asian restaurant, but I didn't encounter any Chinese employees at that restaurant.

The idea of a placement here was only secondary. It really was just serendipitous that they were Chinese. And my shoulders really have been sore for several days. Honest!

There was some language barrier as they were not very proficient in English. So after I paid for the chair massage, I'm not sure they understood my offer of free material, or whether they formally accepted my offer, but when I handed it to them, they accepted it. It was a Simplified Chinese Book of Mormon, an English Book of Mormon, and a Chinese Liahona.

I've always wondered if those Asian massage places that have been springing up were legitimate or not. But this one was obviously legit, with just the chair-massage deal in an open area. No private rooms. The operator was a bit rough on me, but it worked out well. Though if you have specific instructions you need to give your massage therapist, I would recommend against these types of places due to the communication barrier.

Follow-up at restaurant. Thu, Sep 30, 2010.

09/30/2010. Journal entry. I went to a Chinese restaurant that I hadn't been to in a while. The same people worked there. I had given them material before, so I just took in a Chinese Liahona magazine. The waitress/owner recognized me. As I put the magazine and my newspaper on the counter to reach for my wallet to pay, she noticed the magazine and said something about it, so I just offered it to her right there. It look like she was eager to receive it. We chatted a little bit, and as usual, the food was pretty good.

Chinese to members. Sun, Aug 15, 2010.

08/15/2010. Journal entry. A family on vacation visited our ward today. They used to live in the ward, then moved to Utah. They were passing through Indianapolis on their way home from vacation.

I thought "There are a lot of Chinese restaurants between here and Utah" so I offered the father a Chinese/English pair of copies of the Book of Mormon, and suggested to him that they eat at a Chinese restaurant on the way home. He enthusiastically accepted the challenge.

Chinese at restaurant. Thu, Aug 12, 2010.

08/12/2010. 1246. I was in a nearby town, and stopped at a Chinese buffet restaurant for supper. The last time I remember going to that restaurant was September 2004. So I was pretty sure they would have had a turnover of waitresses since then.

I put a Chinese (simplified script) copy and an English copy of the Book of Mormon on my table while I ate and read the newspaper.

When the waitress came by to retrieve a used plate, she noticed the books, and I asked if she liked to read Chinese. She was genuinely interested in them and appeared to be excited to see a book in Chinese. She asked how much they were, and I said "mien FAY" (free) and "GAY knee" (I give you). She was very excited to receive the Chinese copy and she politely declined the English, indicating she couldn't read it. At that point, I opened both books to 1 Nephi 1:1, and put my index fingers on each copy, and read the verse in English while I moved my fingers under the verse in each book. It then dawned on her that she might be able to use the pair of books to learn to read English. At least I hope, because she then graciously accepted the English copy too.

Hopefully, the church will publish parallel-column bi-lingual copies in Chinese/English, Swahili/English, etc. And the idea of using the Book of Mormon to learn English (or another language) will be more obvious.

When I paid later, I offered the cashier the same books as I gave the waitress (I brought in 2 copies of each). But she was fluent in English, and politely declined.

I have to give the Lord credit on this one, because I sincerely believe my trip to that town was inspired, a spiritual prompting. That's the only reason I went. I hope I'm not saying that to brag, but to give credit to the Lord, and illustrate that He knows where everyone is, and who is ready to receive a gospel seed. If you're willing to make a delivery, He's willing to give you an assignment.

See next post for a gas stop on the same trip.

Chinese at restaurant. Mon, Jun 21, 2010.

06/21/2010. 1241. I had a very late lunch at a nearby Chinese restaurant. I had been there before, shortly after it had opened for business, but it was too busy to offer the people anything.

The cashier and cook were taking their mid-afternoon meal break, but they went back to work to take my order and cook it up. After ordering and paying I sat down. I had forgotten whether I had actually offered them anything the previous trip, so I hadn't brought my Asian book bag in. But thinking it was worth a try, I went back out to the car to retrieve it, and placed a Chinese (simplified script) copy and an English copy of the Book of Mormon on my table, while I read my newspaper.

When the young lady brought my food out, she noticed the Chinese Book of Mormon, and said something about it. I asked where she was from, China or Taiwan, and she was from China. I offered her the Book of Mormon, and she was genuinely interested in it. She accepted it after I explained it was free ("mien FAY"). She claimed she didn't know English well enough to receive the English copy, but I illustrated how to read them together, and I think she caught the idea of improving her English that way. So she ended up accepting both. The cook came over and he was interested too.

She asked about the church, and I showed her the information flyer with the list of local chapels. I also wrote down the name and phone number of a Mandarin-speaking member in the neighboring stake.

There were no other customers while I ate most of my meal, and the cook actually started reading the Chinese Book of Mormon that I had given them!

Chinese at restaurant, Mon, May 31, 2010.

05/31/2010. 1240. I helped a ward family move this morning. For lunch, I planned on going to a friend's restaurant located in that general direction, but farther out of town. I noticed this Chinese restaurant on the way to the friend's restaurant, and wondered if I had been there before or if it was new.

The friend's restaurant was closed for Memorial day, so I headed back to town, and stopped at the Chinese place for lunch.

I ordered at the counter and sat down and put the two kinds of Chinese copies of the Book of Mormon, along with an English copy on my table. When the waitress/owner brought my food she didn't react to seeing the books.

After I was finished eating, I went back to the counter to buy another soda (for the road) which I bought from the husband/cook. I offered him the Chinese copy which he accepted, and he also accepted the English copy. He quickly flipped through the Chinese copy, before going towards the back and saying something to his wife in Chinese. He wasn't overly enthusiastic, but seemed genuinely grateful.

Chinese at restaurant. Tue, Mar 30, 2010.

03/30/2010. 1237. I met a friend at a Chinese buffet restaurant in the next town over. He's a regular there and friends with the owners and the waitresses. He's American, but speaks pretty good Mandarin. I was there years ago, but I forget if anyone there accepted any church material. Even if it's the same owners, I'm confident that the wait-staff has turned over since then. My friend may have offered material in the past to the waitresses whom he knows.

We chatted with three different waitresses during our dinner. I think we offered something to all three of them, but only one accepted a Chinese Book of Mormon. She declined the English copy, saying she couldn't read English, and she apparently hasn't been interested in learning.

Chinese at restaurant. Thu, Dec 10, 2009.

12/10/2009. 1233. I had supper at a new Chinese buffet restaurant. It's in the same location as a previous one, but with new owners. As I paid, the father and the teenage son were up at the cashier counter. The father didn't seem to speak much English, and I spoke mostly with the son. I offered him some free material from church, and he said he already had a Bible, but he agreed to see what I had. After paying, I went out to the car and retrieved my book bag. He accepted the simplified script Chinese Book of Mormon, an English Book of Mormon, and a DVD of "To This End Was I Born" that has a Mandarin audio track.

I still haven't gone back and organized my notes of contacts and book placements on last month's trip to Florida. I need to find a better way of keeping track of things while I'm on the road.

Road Trip. Sat, Nov 21, 2009.

Road trip to Florida.

11/21/2009. 1213. In Georgia Getting ready to leave the motel. Thai/English BoM and the "The Restoration" DVD (with Thai audio track) to guy in motel parking lot, he was changing or adding oil. Joe, from Bloomington Indiana.

11/21/2009. 1214. In Florida. Chinese/English Book of Mormon at lunch, to a father/son at their restaurant. Felt it was inspired.

11/21/2009. I felt inspired to stop at this shopping center. Went to a certain restaurant and got something quick, but didn't make any offers.

11/21/2009. 1215. At another restaurant at the same shopping center, went to a Chinese restaurant for a snack. The cashier accepted one of the DVD's with a Chinese audio track but she declined the Book of Mormon.

11/21/2009. 1216. I arrived in my destination city. That evening, as I was shopping at a bookstore, I saw an Asian man studying at one of the tables. I took a chance and struck up a conversation with him. I offered and he accepted a Chinese Simplified script and an English Book of Mormon, and a Heavenly Father's Plan DVD.

11/21/2009. 1217. Later, I bought something at the local Wal-Mart. My cashier spoke French and Haitian Creole. I offered, and she accepted copies of the Book of Mormon in those languages plus English.

11/21/2009. 1218. As I went back in with those books, and got in line again at her cash register, the people head of me were speaking Albanian. But they politely declined to receive the Book of Momron in Albanian.

11/21/2009. 1219. Later I stopped at a gas station, and offered the English-speaking cashier a Book of Mormon, but she politely declined.

Road trip. Fri, Nov 20, 2009.

Road trip to Florida.

11/20/2009. 1204. I need to take better notes, or remember to use my mp3 recorder. I was in either Kentucky or Tennessee. I think I was inspired to take a certain exit, and go down the road for a while. After driving a few minutes, there was a yard sale going on, and I felt inspired to stop there. I bought some trinket. I offered a Joy to the World DVD and a Mr. Krueger's Christmas DVD to the two gentlemen there. I described them as Christmas videos from the Mormon church, so that they knew the source. They were just regular English-speaking Caucasian-American guys.

11/20/2009. 1205. At the next exit or shortly thereafter, I was prompted of the Spirit to take that exit and go to a particulat gas station. I bought some gas and something inside, like a beverage. Again, no obvious speakers of foreign languages. To the owner/cashier, I offered a Joy to the World DVD, describing it as a Christmas DVD or Nativity DVD with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and he accepted it.

11/20/2009. 1206. Around 3:15 pm, I saw a sign for a Chinese restaurant. It was one of the offical Interstate signs that shows the businesses for Food - Gas - Lodging at that exit. The Spirit indicated I should go to the Chinese restaurant featured on the sign. So It took that exit and drove the 2 miles to the restaurant.

The cashier/owner looked bright/shiny, so I figured she was my "intended contact." But while I was waiting for my food, and then eating, I also saw a lady who looked like she was from the Philippines. The Filipina lady ordered, left, and then came back later for her food. As she was leaving the second time, I asker her, in Tagalog, if she spoke Tagalog. She said "yes" in English. I offered her a free book in Tagalog from my church. I said it was "the Book of Mormon" and asked if she had heard about it. She said "Yes, I'm a member." But she didn't have a Tagalog copy, and she was willing to accept one. She also spoke Waray, and was willing to accept a Waray copy too.

I forget now if I had paid already by that time, but I had left enough "stuff" at my table to indicate that I'd be back if I hadn't paid, and we both went outside to get the books. It turned out she had parked next to my car anyway.

She asked if I was a missionary or ward missionary. I told her that this was her miracle, that I was from Indiana, headed to Florida on the Interstate, and the only reason I was there was due to a spiritual prompting to go to that restaurant when I saw the sign for it on the road.

She said she hadn't been to church since her mother died, and I replied that Heavenly Father must be looking out for her to send someone to meet her like that. She also accepted a "Together Forever" DVD. I suggested she go see her bishop or branch president and tell him what just happened.

By meeting another customer like that, it made me think that the two previously inspired stops may have been "timing loops" to keep me busy so that I arrived at the restaurant at just the right time to meet her.

1207. I went back in and finished my meal. When the cashier/owner took a breather, I offered her a Chinese Book of Mormon along with an English copy and a DVD, which she accepted.

11/20/2009. Later that evening, going through Atlanta during rush hour, I was in the wrong lane, and twice took wrong turns that delayed me.

11/20/2009. Follow-up. In Georgia, just south of Atlanta, I saw a Texaco gas station sign just beore an exit and I felt prompted to go there. When I got there, I realized it was the same place I had been prompted to stop at almost 2 years ago. I asked the cashier if he still had the books I had given him, and he said he gave them to someone else. I asked if he wanted more, and he said okay, so I gave him Urdu and English copies of the Book of Mormon, and Pashto and English copies of Gospel Fundamentals.

11/20/2009. 1208. At the same gas station, standing next to me in line was a man who seemed to be from Africa. I asked him where he was from, and he said Nigeria. He spoke Igbo, so I offered him an Igbo and an English Book of Mormon and he accepted. We talked for several minutes outside, and I realized I might have had an Igbo Bible in my car, so I asked him if he had one, and he said no. I looked for it, and found it, and offered it to him, and he accepted it. He was driving a very expensive car, so I said that instead of asking him to pay for it, I would like him to "pay it forward" and help someone else out, and it would eventually get back to me. He gave me his business card.

11/20/2009. 1209. I was so excited at that encounter with another customer, that I got back on the Interstate going wrong way. It occured to me that the wrong turns in Atlanta had served as "timing loops" again for this encounter with another customer.

I didn't realize I was going the wrong direction for about 10 miles. I got off the Interstate at next exit after I realized my mistake, and felt prompted to go to one of the gas stations there. I saw a guy dumpster-diving in the trash cans at the gas station and pulling out styrofoam clamshells with left-over food. I gave him some fresh fruit and bread that I had in the car, and encouraged him not to eat from trash cans as he could get sick.

I went inside and purchased something, and realized one of the cashiers was foreign-born. He was from Nigeria and accepted Igbo and English copies of the Book of Mormon. Again, an absent-minded mistake of going the wrong way led to another opportunity. But, due to the timing needed, I had to meet the guy at the Texaco first. What I thought were stupid mistakes actually generated more opportunities.

11/20/2009. 1210. I forget if this was prompted or not, but I got off at another exit and went to a Chinese restaurant. The owners accepted Chinese and English of the Book of Mormon, and an employee accepted Spanish and English copies of the Book of Mormon. I just had an egg roll.

11/20/2009. 1211. Next to the Chinese restaurant was a convenience store. I bought something, and the cashier accepted a Hindi Book of Mormon and Hindi Liahona.

I then went to a Taco Bell or something like that across the road. I thought that might have been inspired, but I did not recognize any opportunities. It's possible that I was supposed to just talk to English speakers.

11/20/2009. 1212. At the motel I stayed at that night, the night clerk accepted a Hindi and an English Book of Mormon.

Chinese at restaurant. Road trip. Thu, Nov 19, 2009.

11/19/2009. 1202. On the road towards the South. I stopped at a Chinese restaurant along the road. I found it while looking for my favorite brand of gas station near the Interstate. I put some material, a traditional (suffix -265) Chinese Book of Mormon, an English Book of Mormon, and a Chinese Liahona on my table while I ate. I suppose the waitress/hostess saw it when she cleared away plates (it was a buffet.) When I paid later at the cashier counter, I offered the material to her, and she accepted them. She wasn't overly enthusiastic, but she was polite and gracious in her acceptance.

To give the Lord credit, I believe that I felt inspired to stop and eat here as I drove by.

Chinese at restaurant. Tues, Oct 6, 2009.

10/06/2009. 1193. I was on the other side of town at a client's office for an appointment. My client and I took a lunch break and went to a nearby inexpensive Chinese buffet. Very inexpensive, but the food was good. I've been there before, years ago, but I don't remember if they accepted anything. It might have changed owners since then, too, since the staff looked different.

This client is a member of the church, is a Caucasian-American, and speaks Mandarin. He has taught several investigator Sunday School classes at church to Mandarin-speaking Chinese students who were studying at a local university. So, he's familiar with my restaurant approach.

After we finished eating, I asked him if he wanted to present material to the staff. He told me "you go for it." So, I took a Chinese/English bilingual New Testament, Chinese and English copies of the Book of Mormon, and a DVD to the cashier stand, and offered them to the guy behind the counter. He was interested, but not overly enthusiastic. He accepted the books, but not the DVD.

Chinese/English to members. Sat, Sep 26, 2009.

09/26/2009. Journal Entry. I was at a church-fair in another town, where the local wards or stake were putting on the fair. There was a booth on Spirituality, featuring various religious texts, such as the Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon, etc.

In my conversation with the young couple who staffed the booth, I found out they like to eat at Chinese restaurants. I told them about some of my efforts to offer people foreign language editions of the Book of Mormon. I offered to give them Chinese and English copies for them to take to a Chinese restaurant and they accepted the challenge, so I went to my car and retrieved a pair and present the books to them. I gave them a 2 minute explanation of how I do it. They seemed excited about it.

Asian languages at bank. Tue, Sep 8, 2009.

09/08/2009. 1187. I was at the bank. The customer at the next window over appeared Asian, and he was being chatty with the teller. So after we were both done, I started a conversation with him based on something he said to the teller. It turned out he spoke Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and German. He accepted my offer for copies of the Book of Mormon in those languages, plus English. He was parked just a couple spots over from me, so it was easy to hand them to him from the trunk of my car. He seemed genuinely appreciative of the gifts.

Chinese at restaurant w/missionaries. Wed, Aug 26, 2009.

08/26/2009. 1183. I took our ward's two full-time missionaries (elders) out to dinner. The senior companion got transferred in right after the last baptism. The junior companion, a greenie, just arrived in the mission this morning. So this was his first dinner (supper) in the mission.

I took them to an Asian restaurant that is within the ward's boundaries, but I wasn't sure which language the employees speak. The senior companion asked our waitress what languages she spoke, and she said Mandarin, so I got out some Chinese material from my book-bag that I had taken in.

On one of her later trips to the table, we asked if she still liked to read Chinese, and she said yes, so we offered her the Simplified script Chinese (she's from China) Book of Mormon, and a Chinese Liahona, and the "Finding Happiness" DVD. She accepted all of them, but wasn't very enthusiastic about it. I forgot to offer her an English copy. (The restaurant is real good, so I hope to follow up in the future, and maybe talk to other employees.)

Another waitress who refilled our glasses looked Chinese too, but she was so quick we couldn't get a word in with her.

The greenie elder was impressed for his first day in the field. Both elders knew how to use chopsticks, and both ate what I ordered for them, so I was impressed with them too.

Chinese at restaurant. Mon, Jul 27, 2009.

07/27/2009. 1170. I went a bit out of my way to a Chinese restaurant. I found it a couple weeks ago while scouting for restaurants, but haven't actually eaten there before. It's one of those walk-up-to-the-counter-and-order kind of places. After I finished eating, I went back to the counter and offered the employee a Simplified Chinese Book of Mormon and a Chinese Liahona magazine, and she reluctantly accepted them. She declined the English Book of Mormon. Since she wasn't enthusiastic about the Chinese edition, I didn't push the bilingual aspect of reading the Chinese and English copies together.

Punjabi, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese. Road trip. Wed, Jul 8, 2009.

07/08/2009. 1162. I took a day trip to visit relatives. Around lunch-time I came across an Interstate exit where I had noticed an Indian restaurant during a nearby fuel stop on a previous trip, so I decided to eat there. The cashier spoke Punjabi, and accepted my offer of Punjabi and English copies of the Gospel Fundamentals manual, and Punjabi and English copies of the Joseph Smith Testimony pamphlets.

1163. Later, that evening, after visiting with relatives I was on my way home, but still in the metropolitan area where they lived. As I was about to pass a certain exit, I felt a spiritual prompting to take that exit, but I was in the wrong lane to quickly act upon it. I was pretty sure it was a spiritual prompting, as opposed to my own thought, because I was not looking for opportunities or thinking about stopping anywhere at the time, but I had planned to look for a Chinese restaurant later on.

The next exit was only a mile away, so I took it, got back on the Interstate and took the previous exit. As I observed the sign containing the logos of the gas stations at that exit, I felt prompted to visit a certain one. However, when I reached the stop-light at the end of the exit ramp, I received a prompting to turn in the opposite direction from that gas station. I figured there must be another opportunity or "assignment" in that direction too, and could then come back and get that other gas station on the way back.

So I turned in that direction, looking for an opportunity, and hoping for further directions. It was about time for a late dinner anyway, so I thought there might be an opportunity at a restaurant. (My relatives eat late, so waiting around to eat with them would have caused me to arrive home too late at night.) Within a couple blocks there was a gas station, and I felt an impression that that was where the assignment was.

I went in and bought something, and as I paid I asked the cashier where he was from. India. And what languages he spoke. Punjabi and Hindi. I was out of Punjabi Gospel Fundamentals, but he also read Hindi. Many Punjabis who speak both Punjabi and Hindi, read Punjabi, but don't read Hindi; as Hindi is their second language, and is not taught in many of their schools. But this guy did read Hindi, so I offered him a Hindi Book of Mormon, and he accepted. After paying I went to the car and brought back Hindi and English copies of the Book of Mormon, and a Hindi Liahona. He gratefully and enthusiastically accepted them. Yup, it was worth the side-trip, and very convenient to the Interstate, to boot.

1164. I headed to the other side of the Interstate to one of the other gas stations, the one that I thought was my "assignment", and bought something there. Based on the cashier's accent, I asked him if he spoke Arabic, which he did. I offered him a free book in Arabic from church, and he heartily agreed to receive it. So after paying, I retrieved an Arabic and an English Book of Mormon from the car, went back in and presented them. He was also grateful and enthusiastic in accepting them. In both cases I made sure they realized it was Christian material before I retrieved the items from the car.

And I went on my way rejoicing, as missionaries used to say. Defintely worth the stop, and even backtracking the mile. The Lord knew they were there.

1165. Further towards home, just outside of that metro area, was another town that seemed like a good spot to look for a Chinese restaurant. It didn't feel like an assignment this time, but as I drove, I prayed if I should take that exit, and the answer seemed to be "you can if you want." So I took the exit, and headed towards the town. I went about three blocks without seeing a shopping center or strip mall, and then took the turn indicated by the "Business District" sign, and within that next block was a strip mall type shopping plaza. I turned in there and at the other end was a Chinese restaurant.

It was a typical mom-and-pop place, mainly carry-out, but also with tables for dining in. I ordered, paid, sat down, put the Chinese Simplified and English copies of the Book of Mormon, and the Asian "Finding Happiness" DVD on my table, and read the paper that I had bought at the last gas station.

Their son noticed the material when he brought out my food, but he didn't read Chinese, he just spoke it. As I ate, I needed another can of soda, so I went back to the counter to buy another, and there made the offer of material. The cashier agreed to see it, so I went back to my table and brought both copies back to the counter. The cashier accepted the Chinese copy, but declined the English, and declined the "Finding Happiness" DVD.

Later on, as I left, their son was outside on the sidewalk talking to another teen who looked like he could have been the son of the Indian couple who owned the sandwich shop next door. I struck up a conversation with the young man, and he ended up accepting the English Book of Mormon that his mom turned down.
